Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the island that packs more biome into a short drive than almost any country its size — south-coast surf breaks, the central tea-clad highlands above 6,000 feet, eight UNESCO sites, two distinct monsoon systems, and the highest leopard density in Asia in Yala. A working itinerary here moves every two or three nights, and a returning traveller learns to plan around the country's twin-monsoon rhythm rather than ignore it.

The cultural triangle is the country at its most concentrated. Sigiriya rock fortress and the Polonnaruwa ruins, Anuradhapura's sacred bo tree (still standing from a cutting taken in 288 BC, which is the kind of fact Sri Lanka quietly does well), the Dambulla cave temples — all walkable from a base like Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Cape Weligama, or the Resplendent Ceylon group's more interior properties. The hill country trains — Kandy to Ella, Nanu Oya to Haputale — are a working commuter line that happens to run through the country's most photographed terrain, and the second-class carriage with its open windows is the right ticket.

The luxury map here has matured fast. The Geoffrey Bawa heritage — Lunuganga, Number 11 in Colombo, Heritance Kandalama still operating under his architectural hand — sets the visual language; the contemporary properties (Cape Weligama, Anantara Tangalle, Amangalla in Galle Fort) have largely respected it. Galle Fort, the seventeenth-century Dutch-colonial walled town on the south coast, is the country's most considered urban stay: car-free inside the walls, a working community rather than a museum, breakfast at the Fortaleza before the day-trippers arrive.

The two-monsoon system requires reading. December through March is the west and south coasts' dry season (Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle); May through September is the east coast's (Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay's surf season). The cultural triangle works year-round but is at its best November to April. Whale watching off Mirissa runs late November through April; blue whales arrive in February and March.
