Belize

Belize is the small country that out-punches its size on almost every metric a traveller cares about. It sits on the second-largest barrier reef on Earth, holds the western hemisphere's only jaguar reserve, and is the rare Central American destination where English is the working language — a quirk of its British colonial past that makes the practicalities unusually frictionless.

The country effectively comes in two halves. The cayes — Ambergris, Caulker, the Turneffe Atoll, Half Moon Caye — are the reef story: sand-floor cabanas, an underwater Blue Hole that still earns its diving reputation, and a marine ecosystem that has been formally protected for longer than most Caribbean destinations have considered it. The mainland is jungle, ruins, and rivers: Caracol's pyramids still mostly engulfed in canopy, the long flat ribbon of the Macal River, jaguar tracks across the trail at dawn in the Cockscomb Basin.

The luxury map here is small and deliberately so. Itz'ana on the Placencia peninsula, Ka'ana in the Cayo District, Turtle Inn (Coppola's, but the better one of his three), Belcampo Lodge above the Rio Grande — all small, all family- or founder-led, mostly running on solar with kitchen gardens that supply more of the menu than the supplier list. Itz'ana publishes its plastic-displacement figures by quarter; Belcampo's farm tour functions as the property's mission statement.

A note on timing that travel agents sometimes muddle: November to April is the dry season and unambiguously the best stretch for diving and reef days. But June and July are when the whale sharks come to Gladden Spit, and the visibility off Glover's Reef is still serviceable. The shoulder is a reasonable trade-off if marine life is what brought you.
