Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a United States territory that has never quite read as one — a Spanish-speaking Caribbean island with five centuries of layered history and a culture entirely its own. Old San Juan, the walled colonial core, is the densest of that history: blue cobbles, pastel façades, two forts holding the harbour mouth.
The island packs a surprising range into a short drive. El Yunque, in the east, is the only tropical rainforest in the United States forest system. The south and west coasts hold the quieter beach towns; the offshore islands of Vieques and Culebra hold the best of the sand — Flamenco Beach on Culebra, and on Vieques a bioluminescent bay that glows when the water is disturbed, among the brightest on earth. The mountainous interior, the Cordillera Central, is the island most visitors miss entirely.
December through April is the dry, reliable season. The island sits within the Atlantic hurricane belt, and the season from June onward is a genuine planning input rather than a formality.
