Mexico

Mexico is a country travellers tend to flatten into two postcards — Tulum and Mexico City — and the cost of that flattening is high. The country contains the Mesoamerican Reef, the Sonoran Desert, the Sierra Madre, the Lacandon rainforest, a wine region (Valle de Guadalupe) that now drinks at the level of mid-tier Napa, and a coffee region in Chiapas that supplies Brooklyn's tasting menus without much fanfare. Plan it as one country and the trip falters; plan it as four trips and it begins to make sense.

The Yucatán is where the heaviest tourism gravity sits, and it is not the same place it was a decade ago. Tulum's overdevelopment is real and visible — the cenotes are now ticketed at industrial scale — but the alternative coast around Isla Holbox, the lagoon north of Cancún, has held its shape: no cars on the island, sand streets, the whale-shark season from June to September. Costalegre, on the Pacific south of Puerto Vallarta, holds the country's most considered new properties (One&Only Mandarina, Four Seasons Tamarindo) inside a privately-held 3,000-hectare conservation reserve.

The cultural-capital trip is its own argument. Mexico City has, since roughly 2018, become one of the three or four most interesting food cities in the world — Pujol, Quintonil, and Sud 777 take the headlines, but the deeper case is the daily tortilleria, the morning tianguis, the Roma cantinas at 2pm. Oaxaca is the country at its most layered: mezcal palenques, Zapotec weaving, the seven moles, and Casa Antonieta or Pug Seal Oaxaca for hospitality that takes the place seriously.

November to April is dry and reliable. Day of the Dead (early November) is the country's most rewarding cultural set piece if Oaxaca is on the route; Semana Santa (Easter week) brings serious domestic-tourism pressure that is worth planning around. The Pacific hurricane window from June onward is real on the western coast; the Yucatán's separate Atlantic season is less reliable but still warrants attention.
