Fiji

Fiji is a country of 333 islands held together by the warmest welcome culture in the Pacific. Travellers who only see the resort beach on Viti Levu's Coral Coast leave with the wrong impression: the country becomes a different proposition entirely once you fly the twenty minutes to the Mamanucas, Yasawas, or the more remote Vanua Levu and Taveuni in the east.

The luxury map is unusual. A handful of private-island properties — Laucala, Vatuvara, Royal Davui, Turtle Island — operate on the upper end with carbon and waste-management programmes that put most Mediterranean equivalents to shame. Six Senses Fiji on Malolo runs on solar with battery storage; Kokomo's marine biology team has tagged tiger sharks for ten years. The middle market is harder to navigate; ask an operator how they share revenue with the village that owns the reef, because the answer is the country in a sentence.

Fijian land tenure matters and is worth understanding before arrival. More than 80 per cent of land remains under customary mataqali ownership — the village clan, not the state, owns it — which is the structural reason resorts here have to engage with neighbouring communities in ways that elsewhere is optional. The better properties make this visible. A village visit at Nakavu or Vatuolalai is not a tour; it's a meeting, often opened with kava, and the protocol matters.

The reef story is real and recovering. Fiji's reefs survived the 2016 bleaching event better than most of Australia's, and the Namena and Vatu-i-Ra Marine Reserves are now well-policed. Diving Bligh Water on the bommies between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu remains the country's underwater headline — soft coral at a saturation almost nowhere else still has. Plan around the May-to-October dry season; the cyclone window from late December onward is taken seriously here for good reason.
