Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is the rare Caribbean island where the landscape — not the beach — does most of the work. The two Pitons rise nearly 2,500 feet directly from the sea on the south-west coast, a UNESCO site that is also a working volcanic landform, and a country that wraps almost its entire luxury map around the view of them. Drive over Morne Beausejour as the cloud lifts off Gros Piton and you understand why Derek Walcott (Saint Lucia's, the Nobel laureate's) writing kept returning to this coast.

The hospitality stock concentrates south of Soufrière and along the west coast. Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet, both Nick Troubetzkoy projects, set the country's reference for how to build into the volcanic ridges rather than against them — the Jade Mountain sanctuaries famously have only three walls each, and the architecture has aged better than most Caribbean luxury from the 2000s. Sugar Beach (Viceroy) sits in the saddle between the Pitons; Ladera occupies the most photographed angle in the country and is owner-led. Cap Maison up north, on the cliffs above Cap Estate, holds the alternative case at a tighter price point.

The cultural argument is stronger than the average Caribbean island's. The Friday-night Gros Islet jump-up is still a working village street party rather than a tourist event; the Saturday market in Castries reads as the local week's actual economy; the Anse la Raye fish-fry is the south coast's version of the same. Soufrière's drive-in volcano and the Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens give the country's geology a half-day window. Pigeon Island, joined to the mainland by a causeway, holds the colonial-era forts and the May Saint Lucia Jazz festival.

December through May is the dry season and the operational default. June onward brings the wet season and an Atlantic hurricane window that the country has weathered better than most of the eastern Caribbean. Sea turtles nest on the east-coast beaches from March to August; the Maria Islands Nature Reserve, off the south coast, is the country's most considered marine protected area.
