French Polynesia

French Polynesia is 118 islands spread across an ocean territory roughly the size of Europe, held in administrative orbit by Paris and culturally rooted in Tahitian, Marquesan, and Tuamotu identities that pre-date European contact by a thousand years. Most travellers see only the Society Islands — Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora — and miss the more interesting parts of the country: the towering Marquesas to the north, where Gauguin and Brel are buried, and the long necklace of Tuamotu atolls where the diving is what Bora Bora's used to be.

The overwater bungalow was invented here, on Raiatea in 1967, and the country has spent the intervening half-century alternating between defending and questioning its tourism model. The four Brando-aligned properties — The Brando itself on Tetiaroa, plus the conservation-forward newer arrivals on Tikehau, Fakarava, and the upcoming Marquesas project — are the credible high end now. The Brando runs on coconut-oil biodiesel and seawater air-conditioning; its research station has been operating since 2009 and publishes openly.

Practical sequencing: Tahiti is the entry point, not the destination. Plan a night near Papeete to handle jet lag and the Pape'ete fish market at 5am (the local cuisine starts there), then onward by Air Tahiti to the islands proper. For divers, Rangiroa and Fakarava are non-negotiable — the latter's UNESCO-designated atoll is the rare site where grey-reef-shark aggregations are still measured in the hundreds. For everyone else, Moorea is the under-discussed alternative to Bora Bora: same dramatic volcanic ridgeline, a third the price, fewer Instagram tripods at sunset.

May to October is dry season and the practical default. The shoulder months (April, November) work for travellers comfortable with occasional rain in exchange for thinner crowds and noticeably lower rates from the Conrad, St Regis, and the Four Seasons.
