Fogo Island Inn, Fogo Island

Canada's celebrated regenerative inn on remote Fogo Island: a 100% social business reinvesting all surpluses into the Newfoundland community.

Fogo Island Inn sits at the northern edge of Fogo Island (itself sitting off the northeastern coast of Newfoundland) and operates on a founding premise rare enough in the luxury hotel world to warrant stating plainly: every surplus generated by the inn is returned to the Shorefast foundation and reinvested in the community. There are no private investors seeking returns. The community of Fogo Island is the beneficial owner.

That structural clarity informs the experience in ways that are visible from the moment of arrival. The building, designed by Todd Saunders and completed in 2013, sits on stilts over the North Atlantic with the architectural confidence of something that knows its place precisely. The rooms face the ocean through floor-to-ceiling glass, the furnishings were made by Fogo Island craftspeople, and the cuisine is sourced from the island’s fishing and farming traditions.

The inn pioneered ecological wastewater treatment in Newfoundland and sources goods and services locally as a first preference, applying the regenerative framework that Shorefast has documented extensively and other properties now reference as a model.

Fogo Island itself is not easy to reach (ferry from Farewell, or light aircraft), and that access barrier is part of the point. The inn draws guests who have decided the journey is worth making, and it rewards that decision comprehensively. The North Atlantic light, the land’s spare beauty, and the knowledge that the stay is actively good for the place you are visiting produce a combination that is genuinely difficult to find elsewhere.
