Four Seasons

Solar-powered Four Seasons in Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: pioneering coral restoration, turtle rehab, and manta ray research in the Maldives.

The Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru occupies one of the more significant addresses in the Maldives: a 44-acre island within Baa Atoll, the archipelago’s only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The designation is not decorative: the Baa Atoll’s coral reef system, manta ray population, and biodiversity are internationally recognised for their ecological value, and the resort has oriented its entire operation around protecting that value while accommodating guests within it.

The solar installation is among the Maldives’ largest at resort scale: 3,105 panels across 5,380 square metres, saving between 650 and 800 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to powering every room and villa for over a month on renewable energy alone. The figures are the background; the marine conservation work is the experience.

Marine Savers (the resort’s conservation programme) operates a coral propagation project, a Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, and the Maldivian Manta Ray Project from on-site facilities. Guests can participate in trainee marine biologist modules, join reef surveys, or simply be near a programme that has been running for over 15 years with published scientific outcomes.

The overwater villas and beach residences deliver what the luxury brochure promises: iridescent blues from every window, impeccable service, a spa and dining programme that holds to Four Seasons standards. The distinction is that all of this sits within a conservation framework rather than alongside one, a materially different experience for guests who find that context changes the quality of a stay.
