Kurkum

A modern Indian fine-dining restaurant on Muttrah Corniche, between the souq and fort, with elegant vegetarian-friendly plates.

Kurkum is superbly placed for the Muscat traveller whose sightseeing has outpaced their blood sugar. The restaurant sits on Muttrah Corniche, between the main entrance to Muttrah Souq and Muttrah Fort, giving it the rare advantage of being both convenient and composed.

The brief is modern Indian fine dining, freshly prepared, with a boutique feel and a menu that includes vegetarian dishes alongside broader Indian and Chinese-influenced choices. For plant-forward diners, many of the vegetable plates can suit vegan appetites: coconut and chilli okra, Bharwan Bhindi, mango sorbet and lemon sorbet are all safe places to begin the conversation.

The room’s clean white elegance is a good counterpoint to Muttrah’s dense, sensory theatre. Spend the afternoon among frankincense, silver, carved doors and seafront heat, then let Kurkum reset the pace with spice, cooling sorbet and a little ceremony. The complimentary drink and amuse-bouche are a pleasing touch, because Muscat does hospitality with a certain confidence when it wants to.

This is not a dedicated vegan restaurant, so ask clearly and kindly about ghee, cream and dairy. But for a refined Indian meal near one of Oman’s most atmospheric historic quarters, Kurkum is an elegant reprieve: polished, fragrant, and close enough to the souq that you can still hear the day humming outside.
