Mineralbad and Spa

Mario Botta-designed alpine thermal baths in Rigi Kaltbad, with warm mineral pools, mountain views and spa rituals.

Mineralbad and Spa Rigi Kaltbad feels like a mountain secret translated into stone, water and geometry. The spa sits high on Mount Rigi, where the Swiss habit of doing things properly meets a very old bathing tradition and a very modern architectural hand.

Expect sustainably heated water, snow-bright views and Mario Botta’s clean contemporary design. The complex was designed by the Swiss architect, the bathing area spans two floors, and guests soak in 35-degree mineral water from the Rigi healing spring known as the Drei-Schwestern Brunnen.

It is the contrast that makes the place sing. Inside, Botta’s forms keep the experience composed and almost monastic; outside, the view does the flamboyant work. Indoor and outdoor pools let you move between shelter and exposure, warmth and alpine air, the body softening while the mountains remain magnificently indifferent.

This is not a bells-and-whistles spa in the resort sense. Its luxury is elemental: mineral water, clean lines, quiet rituals, and the satisfaction of arriving somewhere that has edited out the unnecessary.

Go early if you can. Rigi rewards those who let the day begin slowly, preferably neck-deep in warm water while the peaks put on their morning theatre.
