Mumtaz Mahal
A long-running Muscat North Indian fine-dining address, known for Mughlai flavours, city views and vegetarian-friendly choice.
Mumtaz Mahal is Muscat’s old-school Indian fine-dining address: a little ceremonial, a little nostalgic, and still very useful for vegetarians who want dinner to feel like an occasion rather than a compromise.
Mumtaz Mahal has served North Indian food in Muscat since 1984, has won “Best Indian Restaurant” at the Oman Today Restaurant Awards ten times, and is located in Al Qurum near the City Amphitheater and Children’s Museum. The menu carries a substantial vegetarian selection and more limited but possible vegan choices.
The cooking is Mughlai in spirit: aromatic gravies, paneer, breads, rice and the kind of spicing that makes the room feel warmer before the first bite. Vegans should ask carefully, as many vegetarian dishes use dairy, but plant-forward travellers still have more room to manoeuvre here than in many formal dining rooms.
There is a certain charm in the restaurant’s confidence. Mumtaz Mahal is not chasing minimalism or natural-wine cool. It knows its lane: North Indian hospitality, polished service, Muscat views and a menu built for lingering.
Go when you want a vegetarian-friendly dinner with ceremony. Order slowly. The best Indian meals have never been improved by haste.
