Restaurant Lauenensee

A cash-only chalet kitchen on the shore of the Lauenensee, serving fondue and Chässchnitte inside the Gelten-Iffigen nature reserve.

The road into Lauenen narrows, then narrows again, and finally delivers you to the Lauenensee: a small, clear mountain lake held in a bowl of forest and rock, with a waterfall threading down the cliffs behind it. Restaurant Lauenensee sits right on the shore, and asks very little of you beyond showing up.

This is not a place that strains for effect. It is a straightforward chalet kitchen serving the food the setting calls for: fondue, Chässchnitte, Swiss cheese done properly, a local beer or a glass of regional wine on a sunlit terrace. The lake does the rest.

It helps that the surroundings are protected. The restaurant sits within the Gelten-Iffigen nature reserve, one of the Bernese Oberland’s quieter stretches of high country, which keeps the development at bay and the birdsong in. The walk in from Lauenen village is gentle and genuinely lovely, and there is a bus from Gstaad for those who would rather not drive the narrow road.

Two caveats worth knowing. The kitchen runs on the alpine calendar, open only through the summer season, roughly late May to late October. And it takes cash only, so stop at a machine before you climb. Plan for both and you are rewarded with one of the Saanenland’s most unaffected afternoons: good cheese, cold water, and nowhere in particular to be.
