Burj Al Arab

Dubai's sail-shaped icon on its own private island: 199 duplex suites, butler service and the Michelin-starred Al Muntaha.

Few buildings are as instantly recognisable as the Burj Al Arab. The sail-shaped hotel rises 321 metres from its own man-made island off Jumeirah Beach, and has spent two and a half decades as shorthand for Dubai itself. The popular myth of a ‘seven-star’ rating is just that, a myth, but the hotel’s ambition was always to sit beyond the usual scale.

The all-suite layout runs to 199 duplexes, each looking out over the Arabian Gulf, each allocated a generous complement of staff and a 24-hour butler. Inside the sail-like facade, an atrium soars to a height comparable with the Eiffel Tower: a piece of theatre the hotel has never been shy about.

Dining and wellness are accordingly grand: the Michelin-starred Al Muntaha among the restaurants, the Assawan Spa among Dubai’s best, infinity pools on the 18th floor, and the Sal beach club with its open views of the Gulf. Two kilometres of private beach handle the rest.

The Burj Al Arab is also Jumeirah’s most ambitious in-house renovation: the first comprehensive restoration in the hotel’s history, led by Parisian interior architect Tristan Auer, refreshing the suites, public rooms and signature interiors that have defined the property since 1999. Periods of closure are part of that work. Travellers planning a visit should check Jumeirah for current availability, since the group occasionally redirects bookings to its other Dubai properties during phases of the restoration.

For a traveller who wants Dubai’s defining landmark, the Burj Al Arab remains a confident recommendation. Book a high-floor suite, dine at Al Muntaha, and let the building do what it has always done best.
