Kattakaffihusid

Reykjavík's first cat café and vegan bakery: café classics with a plant-based twist, and resident cats all available for adoption.

Cat cafés have settled into cities the world over, so it was only a matter of time before Reykjavík had one of its own. Kattakaffihúsið is Iceland’s first, and, much like the felines padding between its tables, it has landed firmly on its feet.

The café side is a fully vegan bakery, turning out café classics with a plant-based twist. Grilled sandwiches and oozing waffles handle the savoury and the sweet, while the counter is stocked with vegan cakes, cheesecakes and brownies. Do not leave without trying the kleina, the gently naughty deep-fried Icelandic doughnut.

The cats, of course, are the other half of the appeal, and there is a thoughtful detail here. The resident cats are all available for adoption, which means a visit doubles as a quiet bit of good: every cat that finds a home through the café is a small success story.

It does come with one cheerful risk. Spend an afternoon among friendly, adoptable cats and there is every chance you leave with rather more than a coffee and a doughnut.

For plant-forward travellers in Reykjavík who want a café stop with genuine warmth (and a conscience), Kattakaffihúsið is a charming, easy-going choice, and an unusually feel-good one.
