Kunsteisbahn Gstaad Ice Rink
Gstaad's central open-air ice rink, open in winter for skating and hockey, then transformed for beach volleyball in summer.
Kunsteisbahn Gstaad is a neat little proof that the village does not need to overcomplicate charm. In winter, the open-air rink sits right in the heart of Gstaad, giving skaters and hockey players a polished patch of ice within easy reach of boutiques, cafes and something warm afterwards.
The seasonal rhythm is straightforward: beach volleyball takes over in summer, ice skating and hockey return in winter, with the rink typically open from mid-October to the start of March. Skates and hockey sticks can be hired, and the central location makes it easy to pair an hour on the ice with lunch, hot chocolate, or a restorative glass of something more grown-up.
This is not the most rarefied Gstaad experience, which is exactly why it works. The resort has enough grand hotels and mountain drama to go around. The rink is simpler: children learning to balance, confident locals cutting clean lines, visitors discovering that glamour looks better when it is laughing at itself a little.
Go late afternoon if you can, when the village begins to glow and the cold feels crisp rather than punitive. The luxury here is pure winter civility: a pair of skates, a central village square, and the pleasing knowledge that dinner is only a short, careful walk away.
