Mount Eggli
Gstaad’s Eggli mountain pairs a smooth gondola ride with panoramic terraces, skiing, winter hiking and family-friendly tobogganing.
Mount Eggli is Gstaad at its most useful: close, scenic, and capable of turning a spare morning into a proper mountain moment. The plan is simple. Take the cable car up, admire the view, pause at the rustic mountain restaurant, then decide whether the way down should involve skis, a toboggan or a more dignified descent.
A 10-seater Porsche-designed gondola, opened in 2019, runs from Gstaad to Eggli, and the winter toboggan route begins near the mountain restaurant at around 1,557 metres above sea level. The run down towards Gstaad is about five kilometres, with views across the Bernese, Valais, Vaud and Fribourg Alps.
That makes Eggli a fine entry point for travellers who want alpine drama without overcomplicating the day. It is family-friendly, scenic enough for non-skiers, and still useful for those who do want proper snow underfoot.
The restaurant terrace is part of the pleasure. Gstaad can sometimes feel like a stage set for immaculate knitwear; up here, the mountains take over the styling department.
Go for lunch, a winter walk, a toboggan run, or simply to remember that in Switzerland, even a quick lift ride can become a small piece of choreography.
