Le Sereno Saint Barth reopens 16 November after a three-year renovation

Le Sereno Saint Barth reopens for the season on 16 November 2026, closing out the most significant transformation in its near two-decade history. Owners Luis and Angelica Contreras led the three-year project personally, keeping the intimate waterfront setting and personal service that have defined the hotel on Grand Cul-de-Sac.

The work began from a sense that both the property and the family's vision had matured. "We felt that both Le Sereno and our vision for it had reached a new level of maturity," Luis Contreras said. "This transformation was never about changing its identity."

He said the aim was to express that maturity more fully through nature, design and hospitality, while staying true to the understated spirit of both Le Sereno and St. Barth. The result is a hotel that has changed in nearly every detail but not in tone.

A collection of gardens

The centrepiece is a landscape project conceived with creative director Denys Ridrimont. Instead of one garden, the family built a collection of them, each with its own atmosphere. Guests now arrive through a living tunnel of coconut palms, then pass a spread of palms, tropical plants and rare trees laid out across the property.

Beside the new arrival area, decked with tropical green walls, stands a Copernicia fallaensis, a monumental palm spanning more than ten metres that the hotel believes is the only specimen of its kind on the island. Each suite also has its own garden, with shade, natural cooling and secluded corners for sitting.

Greenery now works as part of the architecture, softening façades and pulling the landscape into daily life. "We wanted each space to become a true place, with its own personality," Contreras said. "Each suite has its own garden, so that memories can be born there."

The hotel also worked with the Collectivité de Saint-Barthélemy and the Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Barthélemy to restore the beachfront. The equivalent of thousands of truckloads of sand was dredged from the protected lagoon and placed on the beach, which is now larger, beneath coconut palms and beside water where sea turtles can be observed.

The suites and the new beach club

Every accommodation has been redone, building on the generous proportions of the all-suite format. Waterfront views, spacious living areas, oversized beds and private outdoor space remain central. New landscaping adds privacy, and canopies designed by Patricia Urquiola shade the waterfront suites so guests can look out at the sea.

The standout addition is the signature Suite des Pêcheurs, which measures 230 square metres on the waterfront. It has one bedroom, two bathrooms, ample living space indoors and out, a private pool and a private gate that opens directly onto the beach.

Urquiola furnished the suite, and a coconut palm shades its pool deck. The open-plan bathroom has a sculptural Cenote bathtub. Together, the details are meant to make the suite feel like a private residence on the sand rather than a hotel room.

The stone that mirrors the turquoise water and the largest pool deck in St. Barth remain, but the space has been completely reconsidered. Urquiola created a new conversation pit at the head of the pool and turned the deck around it into a relaxed social setting with outdoor lounges, seafront cabanas, a new pool bar and designer loungers.

Complimentary transparent-bottom kayaks and custom stand-up paddleboards extend the water beyond the pool. The team is unchanged, and the owners say its warmth and discretion carry their vision. "We are fortunate to work alongside an extraordinary group of hospitality professionals who genuinely care about creating memorable experiences," Contreras said.

Le Sereno Al Mare returns as a central part of hotel life, serving contemporary Italian cooking in a newly designed open-air space overlooking Grand Cul-de-Sac, with the lagoon in view from every angle. Fresh local ingredients shape a menu that includes lobster spaghetti, continuing the link between the family's Caribbean and Lake Como addresses.

Spa Le Sereno offers treatments using Valmont products and techniques, with facials, body treatments and massages in intimate rooms, a beachfront pavilion overlooking the lagoon, or the privacy of a suite. Saint Barth's only waterfront spa pavilion was redone and paved with Orosei stone.

With the acquisition of the beachfront property adjoining the hotel came BOKAO, a new beach club conceived as a complement to Al Mare. It promises an intimate, natural take on the St. Barth beach club, where exceptional food meets barefoot living and long lunches stretch into the afternoon.

The atmosphere at BOKAO is built around conviviality rather than spectacle.
