Thompson Rome opens 69 rooms in a 1940s landmark near the Pantheon

Twenty of the 69 rooms are suites, and the kitchen is led by a chef from the three-star Le Louis XV.

Thompson has opened its first hotel in Rome, the Thompson Rome, housed in a refurbished 1940s landmark on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, near Piazza Venezia. Hyatt's lifestyle brand is making its debut in the city, which has seen a run of new hotel openings lately.

The hotel is a ten-minute walk from the Pantheon and close to the Crypta Balbi museum. That part of Rome has drawn artists, scholars and other visitors from across Europe over the centuries, and the hotel says this history shaped its approach to art.

The property has 69 rooms, of which 20 are suites. The range runs from a Junior Suite through suites with a terrace or patio, some overlooking the street itself, to the Thompson Suite, which measures more than 1,000 square feet.

Rooms are modern in design, with warm hues and woods meant to make each one feel like a private corner of the city. The look is deliberately calmer than the public spaces, where the building's postwar history is left on show.

The renovation unearthed original details, and all of them have been restored. They include a massive marble staircase and a sculptural wall and inlaid floor by the Italian creative Gio Pomodoro, which are now alongside bespoke furniture and neutral-hued materials.

Art throughout the hotel reflects the same balance of old and new. Works by artists from the Scuola Romana and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, two twentieth-century movements, hang beside more modern pieces dotted across the property.

Three places to eat and drink

Dining is split across three venues. The Lobby Lounge serves everything from coffee in the morning to aperitivo and cocktails as the sun goes down, making it the hotel's all-day room.

Lyve Restaurant is the main dining room, led by chef Fabio Fioravanti of Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse, which holds three Michelin stars. He serves Mediterranean cuisine with a touch of the Italian coast.

On the menu, the source points to seafood and dishes built around bouillabaisse. The third venue, Lyve Rooftop, uses striking views over Rome as the backdrop for an evening, and it shares its name with the restaurant below.

Designed to feel Roman

Amar Lalvani, chief creative officer of Hyatt Hotels Corporation and president and creative director of Hyatt's Lifestyle Group, said in a press statement that Rome has such a strong identity that Thompson Rome had to start with the city itself.

The building, the neighbourhood, the food, the people and the way Romans live all shaped the hotel, Lalvani said. The goal was a Thompson that feels at home in Rome, a hotel travellers want to discover and Romans want to come back to.

Thompson Rome is now officially open and taking bookings through its own website. No rates were given in the announcement, so what a night in the Junior Suite or the Thompson Suite will cost is not yet known.
