Tabacón Thermal Resort and Spa
Arenal rainforest resort with Costa Rica's natural thermal river, open-air spa bungalows and volcano-heated mineral pools.
Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa is built around a rare piece of geothermal theatre: a natural thermal river flowing from the base of Arenal Volcano. No mechanical reheating, no overdesigned pool fantasy trying to cosplay as nature. Just mineral-rich water, rainforest and the pleasing sense that the earth is doing the spa’s heavy lifting.
It is the only natural thermal river in the region, heated by volcanic activity and winding through tropical gardens as waterfalls and pools. Temperatures sit around 72 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and hotel guests receive unlimited river access plus entry to Shangri-La Gardens, an adults-only hideaway. The spa itself unfolds in open-air bungalows surrounded by rainforest and flowing water.
Opened in 1993, the 102-room hotel is a leading hot-springs destination, and the wider property covers a 900-acre rainforest reserve. That helps explain why Tabacon feels less like a bathhouse and more like a landscape you enter by robe.
Book for the water first. Treatments with volcanic clay, thermo-mineral water or local natural ingredients are lovely embellishments, but the central ritual is simpler: step into the river, listen to the forest, and let Arenal make a persuasive case for doing absolutely nothing.
