Stanford White's 1905 Lambs Club building on West 44th Street, restored by Thierry Despont as a 76-room Art Deco hotel, three minutes from Times Square but trading firmly on Broadway history.
The Chatwal occupies one of Stanford White’s quieter masterpieces: the 1905 Lambs Club on West 44th Street, designed for America’s first professional theatrical fraternity and operated as their clubhouse until the 1970s. The building was declared a New York City landmark in 1974, and what reopened in 2010, after a Thierry Despont restoration, is a hotel that reads as a small museum of pre-war Broadway with bathrooms updated for the present century.
Despont’s hand is in the detail. The lobby keeps the original wrought-iron staircase and theatrical proscenium, lifted into Art Deco with rose-gold finishes, lacquer, mohair upholstery and the sort of low, clubby lighting designed to make every guest feel mildly cinematic at check-in. Seventy-six rooms and suites sit above; oversized brass detailing, marble bathrooms, deep tubs, custom Italian linens, and a few suites whose floor-to-ceiling windows look straight onto the lit-up frame of Times Square three minutes away. The signature suite still carries a baby grand.
You stay here for the proximity without the surrender. Times Square is at the end of the block; Bryant Park, the New York Public Library main branch, and the theatre district’s better stages are within ten minutes’ walk. The Lambs Club restaurant, on the ground floor, leans American grill in the room’s original wood-panelled bar. The hotel’s intimate scale, and its insistence on Broadway provenance over generic hotel polish, is what separates it from the larger Midtown towers a few blocks away.
Book The Chatwal when you want Manhattan with architectural receipts. The lights are close, the lobby is composed, and the building has been hosting actors and audiences in roughly equal measure since Theodore Roosevelt was in office.
