The Sherry-Netherland
A 1927 apartment hotel on Fifth Avenue at 59th Street, facing Grand Army Plaza and Central Park, with 50 individually decorated rooms and suites and Harry Cipriani off the lobby.
The Sherry-Netherland has been telling the time on Fifth Avenue since 1927. Its signature sidewalk clock marks the entrance at 781 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 59th Street, and a Gothic minaret, guarded by stone griffins, tops the building. Grand Army Plaza, Central Park’s main entrance, sits directly across the road.
Inside, Joseph Aruta’s lobby ceiling, inspired by Raphael’s frescoes in Cardinal Bibbiena’s Loggetta at the Vatican, was restored in 2014 to the colours it had in the 1920s. Around it you will find friezes from a Vanderbilt mansion, hand-loomed French carpets, marble mosaic floors and custom crystal chandeliers.
There are 50 rooms and suites, and the hotel insists no two are alike. Some are dressed in golden hues and marble, others in brocade or bold magenta, and the Park View rooms look straight over the treetops. The two-bedroom Park View Suites run from 1,850 to 2,055 square feet, with a fireplace living room, herringbone parquet floors and a full kitchen. Louis Sherry chocolates, Molton Brown products and fresh flowers arrive daily, and the service includes elevator attendants, valet and concierge. Harry Cipriani, off the lobby, is modelled closely on Harry’s Bar in Venice: Venetian food and a Bellini from 7am to 11pm, with 20% off for hotel guests.
Book The Sherry-Netherland when you want old New York manners and the park on your doorstep. One note before you do: the façade is undergoing maintenance under the city’s façade safety programme, so ask the hotel how the works affect your dates.
