Flatdogs Camp arrived in South Luangwa carrying backpacker DNA and has spent two decades evolving without erasing it. The result is the camp that best demonstrates that affordability and character are not in tension, only that achieving both simultaneously requires more effort than going all-in on one or the other.
South Luangwa National Park is the context here, and few parks anywhere on the continent match its combination of biodiversity density and relative visitor scarcity: 100 mammal species, 400-plus birds, and walking safaris that bring guests within metres of leopard, hippo, and the park’s famous buffalo herds. Flatdogs sits just outside the park boundary on the western bank of the Luangwa River, and the wildlife does not observe the fence.
