Flatdogs Camp
South Luangwa's first Fair Trade Tourism certified camp on the Luangwa River: characterful, affordable, and home to the iconic Jackalberry Treehouse.
Flatdogs Camp arrived in South Luangwa carrying backpacker DNA and has spent two decades evolving without erasing it. The result is the camp that best demonstrates that affordability and character are not in tension, only that achieving both simultaneously requires more effort than going all-in on one or the other.
South Luangwa National Park is the context here, and few parks anywhere on the continent match its combination of biodiversity density and relative visitor scarcity: 100 mammal species, 400-plus birds, and walking safaris that bring guests within metres of leopard, hippo, and the park’s famous buffalo herds. Flatdogs sits just outside the park boundary on the western bank of the Luangwa River, and the wildlife does not observe the fence.
The Jackalberry Treehouse is the accommodation that generates the most word of mouth: a tented suite suspended above the forest floor, with 270-degree views over the bush and a nocturnal soundtrack that reassures you about your distance from the city. The other options (chalet rooms, safari tents, the private Crocodile Nest) are genuinely varied in character and suited to different group configurations.
Flatdogs earned Zambia’s first Fair Trade Tourism certification, meaning the supply chain and employment practices have been independently audited, a credential that carries more practical weight than most sustainability marketing.
For the traveller who wants a proper safari without the premium-lodge price point, the Luangwa, and Flatdogs specifically, is the answer.
