Fundu

Twelve-suite boutique on Pemba Island's mangrove shore, Zanzibar's best marine safari property with five-star PADI diving, accessible by boat only.

Fundu Lagoon sits on the south-western shore of Pemba Island (the smaller, quieter, less-visited partner to Zanzibar’s main island) and is accessible only by boat. That detail is not an inconvenience; it is an argument. The mangrove fringe edging the property, the jungle rising behind the beach, and the open ocean beginning twenty metres from the shoreline all depend on that remoteness remaining intact.

Twelve suites (some hillside, some beachfront) spread across the property with enough separation to maintain genuine privacy. The communal spaces, by contrast, are social: four bars including the jetty bar, an open-sided restaurant serving fusion cuisine from local fishing, an infinity pool, and the PADI five-star dive centre that has given Fundu its strongest single credential.

The diving is Pemba’s primary draw, and Fundu exploits the island’s underwater geography comprehensively: pristine coral walls, drift dives, a historic wreck, and deep-water encounters with manta rays, hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, and large pelagic fish that the shallower reefs of Unguja rarely provide.

The name translates from Indian slang as “wonderful” or “non-comparable,” and while marketing-led etymology typically delivers less than it promises, Fundu makes a reasonable case for the descriptor. It has been voted the Best Marine Safari Property in Africa, and the underwater argument for that title is made on every single dive.

Arrive by boat as the sun drops. Stay for the week. The island will not seem small.
