Etihad to launch Abu Dhabi to Calgary nonstop in three weeks

The four-weekly service uses a 303-seat Boeing 787-9, with a payload restriction possible on the return because of Calgary's elevation.

Etihad to launch Abu Dhabi to Calgary nonstop in three weeks

Etihad Airways will begin flying between Abu Dhabi International Airport and Calgary International Airport on Sunday 25 October, the first time scheduled passenger service has linked the Middle East with Alberta, Canada. The launch coincides with the IATA winter slot change for Northern Hemisphere carriers.

The route gives Etihad two Canadian destinations for the first time, joining its existing service to Toronto Pearson. Calgary is the carrier's eighth North American route, and Toronto remains the only North American destination to see its Airbus A380s.

Flights operate four times weekly on a 303-seat Boeing 787-9, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Etihad has 35 of the type, according to ch-aviation, making the 787-9 its most common widebody. The 303-seat layout is the most economy-heavy of its three 787-9 configurations.

The schedule and the aircraft

Business class has 32 seats in a 1-2-1 layout, and economy has 271 seats in a 3-3-3 layout at 31 inches of pitch. The outbound EY29 leaves Abu Dhabi at 2:25 am and reaches Calgary at 7:00 am, a timed block of 14 hours and 35 minutes.

The return, EY30, departs Calgary at 1:00 pm and lands in Abu Dhabi at 12:55 pm the next day, a 13-hour-and-55-minute sector. Calgary's high elevation reduces takeoff performance with a heavy payload, so a payload restriction may be needed on the flight back to Abu Dhabi.

Across a great-circle distance of 6,243 nautical miles, or 11,562 km, each way, this becomes Etihad's fourth-longest route to North America by distance. Measured instead by timed block, it is only the carrier's sixth-longest to the continent.

The 2:25 am departure from the Gulf belongs to Etihad's largest bank of flights to North America. That bank is fed by large numbers of services from Asia, and especially India, which the source describes as critical for this new market.

A network built on connections

The six-hour turnaround in Calgary lets the aircraft land in Abu Dhabi at 12:55 pm, during the heaviest run of inbound services from the United States and Canada. That timing serves onward connections. OAG data for November 2026 shows Etihad planning 57 weekly departures to North America.

That is seven to nine flights a day, making Etihad the third-largest Middle Eastern operator to the continent. Emirates runs 119 weekly services from Dubai and Qatar Airways 98 from Doha. Only Etihad's offering has grown on last November, by 17%, helped by Calgary and other changes.

Atlanta launched in July 2025, followed by Charlotte in March 2026, where Etihad became the only Middle Eastern operator serving North Carolina. Calgary is the latest addition, and no other city in the US or Canada has been announced.

Etihad previously served Dallas until 2018, Los Angeles until 2020 and San Francisco until 2017. With the ongoing war in Iran and its consequences, the carrier is more exposed than before the conflict started, and it is positioning itself for the period after it ends.

How the newer routes are performing

From Abu Dhabi in November, New York JFK has two daily flights on A350-1000s, and Atlanta is daily on the same type. Boston, Chicago O'Hare and Washington Dulles are each daily on 787-9s, Toronto is daily on the A380, and Charlotte and Calgary are four weekly on 787-9s.

US Department of Transportation data for July 2025 to June 2026 shows Etihad carried 163,673 passengers to and from Atlanta. The load factor was 79.9%, five points below the carrier's US average, although five of the months exceeded 90%.

It is unclear what fares were needed to reach those Atlanta results, especially so soon after flights began. Charlotte is newer still, and DOT data runs only through June. In that period 34,406 passengers were carried at a load factor of 73.3%.

Three of the Charlotte months filled fewer than 71.7% of seats, including June at 70.3%. It is early days, and the war in Iran does not help. If Calgary does not exceed four weekly services in 2027, the source expects changes.
