IHG opens 347-room InterContinental Taipei, with Akira Back dining

IHG Hotels & Resorts has opened InterContinental Taipei, developed in partnership with Farglory Group. The 347-room hotel is at the heart of the Taipei Dome complex in Xinyi District, and it opens as InterContinental Hotels & Resorts marks its 80th anniversary.

IHG said the property is the brand's flagship in the Taiwan market, welcoming international travellers and local guests across business, leisure and social occasions. Its stated aim is to connect guests with Taipei's business, cultural, dining and entertainment offerings, and the company calls the district one of the city's most dynamic.

The hotel carries seven distinctive dining concepts, including restaurants led by chef Akira Back. Alongside the food and drink it offers versatile event spaces, an indoor pool, a fitness centre and Club InterContinental, the brand's club-level offer for guests booking higher categories.

What the rooms offer

Classic Rooms start from approximately 38 square metres, and selected rooms frame views of Taipei 101. Residential-style suites begin at approximately 76 square metres and include a full kitchen, a dining area and in-suite laundry, which is more than most city hotels put in a suite.

The design is built around the spirit of "In Taipei, For Taipei". It draws on the city's architecture, culture and collective memory, and it runs through the property in details from the lobby installation to the musical motifs woven into the event spaces.

Robbert Manussen is Area General Manager, Luxury & Lifestyle, Taiwan market, at IHG, and General Manager of InterContinental Taipei. He framed the opening around belonging rather than arrival, and spoke about the city's character in warm terms.

"Taipei is a city of extraordinary energy and modernity, but also one defined by a distinctive sense of warmth and an exceptionally rich way of life," Manussen said.

He continued: "Our ambition is for InterContinental Taipei to be more than a hotel in Taipei; it should feel like a hotel that belongs to Taipei."

"We want the hotel to become a gateway into the city: a place where international travellers can experience Taipei more deeply, and where local guests can discover new ways to enjoy the city they call home," he added.

Where the opening fits for IHG

The opening extends IHG's presence in Greater China, and it puts the InterContinental name inside a complex in Xinyi District, the part of Taipei the company describes as one of its most dynamic destinations for business, culture, dining and entertainment.

The 80th anniversary gives the debut extra weight. InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is celebrating its eighth decade, and the Taipei property is the brand's flagship in the Taiwan market, aimed at international travellers and local guests alike.

Farglory Group is IHG's development partner on the project. The announcement did not disclose opening rates or a date from which reservations can be made, so what a night in the 38 square metre Classic Rooms will cost is not yet public.

The suites with kitchens and laundry point to guests staying longer than a weekend, while the seven dining concepts, including the Akira Back restaurants, are meant to draw local diners as well as those sleeping upstairs.

The event spaces, with their musical motifs, give the hotel a meetings and social base inside the Dome complex, while the indoor pool and fitness centre serve guests across every room category.

IHG has not set out further Taiwan launches or said when rates will be published. Those are the details to watch as the hotel settles into its role as the brand's flagship in the market.
