Kempinski opens Augustine Hotel, Prague in a living monastery in 2027

Kempinski Hotels has announced that the Augustine Hotel, Prague will open in early 2027, beginning a new chapter for one of the Czech capital's most distinctive historic properties. The hotel is within a working monastery in the Malá Strana neighbourhood, where culture, texture and social exuberance both collide and collude.

The property will hold 101 guestrooms, of which 20 are suites, and many retain the original vaulted ceilings and wooden beams of the monks' former living quarters. Following an extensive renovation, the rooms will pair the intimacy and restraint of the monastery with generous, joyful, unexpected details throughout.

Bespoke canopy beds hung with historical tapestries, eclectic furnishings, sculptural lighting and residential-style bathrooms will shape spaces built for comfort and introspection. A considered palette of terracotta, muted indigo, olive and aged brass draws directly from Prague's rooftops, façades and gardens.

At the centre of the hotel's new identity is the idea of "the living room of the city": a community-led social setting that feels residential and welcoming, belonging as much to Prague as to its guests. Public spaces will be reimagined as a series of interconnected social environments rather than a single lobby.

A residential-style bar will anchor the living room, ringed by cosy nooks and gathering spaces where guests and locals can connect, linger and immerse in the city. The room also incorporates a Collector's Table showcasing the work of Czech artisans and craftspeople, which discerning guests can learn from and take away as memories.

A "Living City Ceiling," created in collaboration with an emerging local artist, will carry the destination-led narrative into the hotel's social spaces. Led by LDS Design Studio, the transformation takes its inspiration from St. Augustine, Prague's artistic heritage and the city's dialogue between Gothic, Baroque and Bohemian influences.

Suites tell the city's stories

Original monastic elements will remain central to the experience, integrated thoughtfully alongside contemporary interventions. Rather than treating the past as static, the design invites the monastery's layered history into conversation with the present, and the result is expressive rather than austere.

Pears, grace and mischief, all tied to the life and philosophy of St. Augustine, appear as motifs, alongside tapestries inspired by the Garden of Eden. Kempinski says these touches bring moments of discovery and whimsy, and the signature suites carry the city's cultural history furthest.

The Presidential Suite is a tribute to President Václav Havel, built from richly layered materials and refined residential detailing. Four more suites, the Monastery, Philosopher's Stone, Charles and Fresco, each get their own story through bespoke craftsmanship, artistic references and historic details.

The three-level Tower Suite is due in a second phase and will honour the astronomer Johannes Kepler with dramatic circular architectural forms and panoramic city views. Food and beverage is central to the hotel's new identity, with concepts developed in partnership with Gorgeous Group and Russell Sage Studio.

A refectory bar and a salon dining room

The main restaurant is a grand salon-style neighbourhood dining room, balancing approachable hospitality with modern culinary theatre and lively social energy. Called The Salon, it is built around the principles of "Rebellious Generosity" and "Cosmopolitan Classics Reimagined", pairing global culinary standards with local touches all day.

Simple yet elevated classics will come with tableside theatre, interactive finishes and an evolving, discovery-focused wine list. The restaurant is divided into distinct zones, from a bright brasserie to relaxed dining areas, semi-private spaces and a courtyard, each with its own character within a cohesive footprint.

Service moves from breakfast to evening with live piano music in the background. The bar is in the monastery's historic Refectory, themed on the Twelve Gates and offering a more sensual take on Prague's drinking culture, shaped by the twelve alchemical steps of George Ripley.

Its signature programme has twelve gates, each turning natural botanicals into drinks, with seasonal infusions and local craft absinthes. St. Thomas dark lager and polished plates for sharing are on offer too, served in specialised Bohemian glassware to curated music and DJs.

A daily "Transformation Hour" at sundown will mark the shift from day to night as the space changes character. It is meant as a ritual, and the monastery's own Refectory gives it a setting few hotel bars could match.

Insider access through The E.R.A.s

The physical transformation will be matched by The E.R.A.s, Experience Real Access, Kempinski's programme that connects guests with the people, places and experiences revealing a more personal side of a destination. At Augustine, it draws on the hotel's life within a monastery and its cultural connections across Prague.

Guests will be invited to see the city through insiders, creatives, craftspeople and local figures who offer perspectives beyond the traditional tourist experience. Resident Curators design the programme, which follows Kempinski's wider emphasis on the spirit of the locale, heritage reimagined, and moments of discovery and joy.
