Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to reach Monte Carlo from Paris in 2027
The first overnight departure from Paris Gare d'Austerlitz is scheduled for 10 May 2027, with fares from $5,461 per person.
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will run from Paris to Monte Carlo for the first time in early 2027, with the new route offered annually. The train, operated by Belmond, leaves the French capital, follows the coastal railway of the Côte d'Azur and stops in the Monegasque district.
The first trip from Paris to Monte Carlo is scheduled for 10 May 2027, the first scheduled departure from Paris. Monte Carlo will also become a stop on additional European routes to Venice, so the train's calls at Monaco are not limited to the new Paris line.
Prices start from $5,461 per person, based on two guests sharing a Historic Cabin. Every itinerary includes an overnight stay, 24-hour steward service, meals with a sommelier's choice of wine, unlimited soft drinks and transfers.
Pascal Deyrolle, general manager of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, said in a statement: "Monaco has long held a special place in the story of European travel, with generations drawn to the Côte d'Azur by its distinctive sense of style, culture, and occasion."
Deyrolle added that introducing the destination "feels like a natural continuation" for the train, "bringing the romance of luxury rail travel to a locale that has always understood the art of arrival."
The stop completes a circle. In 1977 the American-British businessman James Sherwood acquired two original 1920s carriages in Monte Carlo. He joined them with more than 20 further carriages, and the fully restored train entered service in 1982.
"There's something rather special about coming back to Monte Carlo, given the role it played in the train's history," Deyrolle said. The carriages were bought here at auction, which he described as setting the whole journey in motion.
What the carriages and cars offer
The overnight journey begins at Paris Gare d'Austerlitz, where guests board the historic midnight-blue carriages from the 1920s and '30s. Accommodation ranges from Historic Cabins to Grand Suites, up to a private carriage called L'Observatoire.
L'Observatoire has a bedroom, an en suite, a living area, a library and even a secret tea room. It is the most elaborate option aboard, and the source gives no price for it or for the Grand Suites.
Dinner is served in one of two restaurant cars, Étoile du Nord or L'Oriental. Afterwards guests can have cocktails and live music in the Bar Car 3674, a carriage the train is known for.
Breakfast the next morning is served in the cabin, with the sparkling coastline of southern France as the backdrop. The train does not stop for the night; the whole Riviera stretch is covered overnight and into the morning.
The route to Monaco
The route passes the dramatic red cliffs of the Massif de l'Estérel, then runs through Saint-Raphaël towards Cannes and Nice. It cuts into the mountainside before arriving at Monaco-Monte-Carlo station.
From the station, the Monte Carlo Casino is a stone's throw away. It starred in two James Bond films. The legendary Circuit de Monaco is also close by, for guests who want to see the racetrack.
Bookings and further information are available through the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express website. Fares are quoted in US dollars, and the source does not give sterling or euro prices for the Paris to Monte Carlo itinerary.
Belmond has not said, in the details available, how many departures will follow in the first season or on which dates the annual service will run.
