Royal Chundu Island Lodge

A private-island Zambezi lodge near Victoria Falls, pairing Relais & Châteaux luxury, river views, community-minded travel, and slow safari days.

Royal Chundu Island Lodge sits on Katombora Island in the Zambezi River, and that detail does much of the seducing. Upstream from Victoria Falls, wrapped by water and sheltered by rapids, it gives the safari lodge formula a private-island hush.

The wider Royal Chundu estate is Zambia’s first and only Relais & Châteaux property, split between River Lodge and Island Lodge. The official site describes four spacious Island Lodge villas on a private island, with both lodges looking onto the Zambezi and a philosophy that links luxury travel with community empowerment. Victoria Falls is around 30 kilometres downstream, close enough for the thunder, far enough for quiet.

The lodge appeals to families and romantic escapes alike, with island walks, sunset cruises, spa time, helicopter flights and candlelit banquets. The stronger story, though, is the balance between ease and place: river light, local craft, slow meals and that particular safari tempo where mornings begin with possibility and evenings end by water.

Royal Chundu is luxurious, certainly, but not in a sealed-off way. Its best argument is that a high-end stay can still feel rooted in the river, the community and the landscape around it. Noble status, lightly worn.
