The exhibition is compact, covering around 5,000 years of Egyptian history, art and culture. The setting is completely underground, with an entrance that recalls an ancient royal tomb followed by daylight-filled rooms. The collection focuses on ancient Egyptian art, including sculpture, objects, funerary culture and later periods.
Mummies, statues, hieroglyphics and papyrus are the broad invitation, but the museum is more than a checklist for Egypt-curious travellers. Its strength is concentration. You do not need a whole day, and you do not need to pretend you can absorb every dynasty before lunch.
Go when Munich’s grand museums start to blur into one another, or when rain makes the English Garden feel like an act of optimism.
