Thai Center Thalea is a small room with serious hands. The studio runs as Thai Centar Thalea in the city’s grid, just north of Trg bana Jelačića, and the work on the table is the real Nuad Boran tradition rather than the soft-music interpretation that has crept into a lot of European hotel spas. The therapists are Thai-trained, the pressure is unapologetic, and the morning after a serious session is always the proof.
The menu sticks to what the practitioners do well. Traditional Thai massage, performed in loose clothing without oil, threads compressions and assisted stretches through the energy lines the tradition calls sen. Hot oil massage runs the more familiar long-stroke bodywork at firmer pressure than the average spa offers. Foot reflexology works the lower legs and feet for travellers whose itinerary has been measured in cobbled kilometres. The room itself is small and softly lit, with the customary fountain trickle and incense; the point, however, is what the hands do, not what the playlist suggests.
