Zuri Zanzibar

A Kendwa beach resort with EarthCheck-recognised design, spice garden, yoga deck, library and Afro-chic island ease.

Zuri Zanzibar sits on Kendwa’s famously easy beach with a clear sense of how to make resort life feel less sealed off from the island. Social responsibility, ecological sustainability, Afro-chic style, a spice garden, yoga deck, open-air library and international cuisine shape the stay. Zuri says it was the first hotel in the world awarded EarthCheck’s Sustainable Design Gold Certification, with hundreds of local plants and trees, a large spice garden and a library with more than 250 books about Zanzibar, East Africa and classic literature.

That is the sort of detail we like. A spice garden is not just a pretty tour stop on an island shaped by cloves, cinnamon and trade; it is a way of letting the place talk back to the resort. The yoga deck and library add softer forms of pause, while the beach keeps doing the obvious work outside.

Zuri is still a luxury stay, with the comfort and choreography that implies. But the better version of that choreography points outwards: to planting, culture, reading, movement and the community around the property. Come for Kendwa’s sand and the Afro-chic rooms, certainly. Stay because the resort has thought about what else should be visible once the sea has your attention.
