Belmond La Residencia

A Belmond hotel of 67 rooms and suites in two old manor houses above the artists' village of Deià, with more than 800 original artworks and 33 Joan Miró works in its restaurant.

Cistercian monks once lived in the two 17th-century manor houses at the heart of La Residencia. They stand on the mountainside below the Tramuntana peaks at Deià, a village of about 600 people with a long-standing artist community. The houses became a hotel in 1984, and locals call it “La Resi”.

More than 800 original works hang in the rooms. Restaurante Miró, the all-day restaurant, is named for the 33 Joan Miró works on its walls. The estate has the Sa Tafona gallery, an art studio and a sculpture studio with a resident artist, and the hotel runs an art competition every two years. Some rooms are set up as artist studios for creative stays.

There are 67 rooms and suites, including a villa. Deluxe rooms run from 36 to 51 m², Junior Suites from 42 to 65 m², and the signature suites and villa from 69 to 190 m². Look for the Miró Suite, the Matthew Williamson Suite and Villa Robert Graves among the named ones.

Dinner is chef Pablo Aranda’s tasting menu at El Olivo, and non-residents can book 30 days ahead. Through the summer, Tramuntana Grill cooks on a Josper charcoal grill by the pool. The olive groves are older than the buildings and still supply the house oil. The spa has six treatment rooms, three of them with terraces, and uses Natura Bissé and 111SKIN. There is an indoor heated pool, an outdoor pool and tennis courts.

Cala Deià is a downhill walk from the hotel, and the walk back is uphill. Palma Airport is 40 to 45 minutes by car, Sóller about 20. Children aged 4 to 12 have the Smile Club from May to September.
