Grand Hotel Son Net

A 1672 Mallorcan manor in the Tramuntana village of Puigpunyent, 16 km from Palma, with interiors by Lorenzo Castillo, its own Malvasia vineyard and a 1,000 m² spa.

A Celtis australis stands at the main entrance of Grand Hotel Son Net. It is the “tree of decisions”, where the estate’s people used to meet. Behind it is a palace house from 1672, one of Mallorca’s old country estates known as possessions, in the village of Puigpunyent. The village is in the west of the island, in the middle of the Serra de Tramuntana, 16 km from Palma.

The manor became a hotel in 1998 and belongs to Cortesin Hotels, the group behind Finca Cortesin. Its 17th-century interior courtyard, spring-fed well and private chapel are still there. The designer Lorenzo Castillo restored the interiors. Expect rustic beams, stone floors, antique fireplaces, carved wooden ceilings and mosaic floors in the rooms.

Rooms start with the 35 m² Palace Rooms, over the garden or the courtyard. At the top is the Grand Son Net Suite, 150 m² on the first floor, with an arched portico over the main pool and the valley. Among the Grand Suites, Jaime III has a 70 m² terrace facing the Puig de Galatzó. A few metres from the Palace, four Pool Cottage Suites share a semi-private pool, and the two-bedroom Pool Cottage House has a private one.

The estate planted almost a hectare of Malvasia vines in 2006 and has made its own wine with a Mallorcan winery since 2007. You can drink it in the hotel or on a vineyard tour. Executive chef Sergi Olmedo cooks Mallorcan food with produce from the estate’s gardens and organic orchards. Breakfast is at MAR&DUIX, the Green Bar serves tapas and cocktails by the fire, and in spring and summer El Gazebo cooks in an open-air kitchen by the pool.

The spa covers more than 1,000 m², and its heated indoor pool is treated with sea salt. It also has five treatment rooms and a thermal circuit of sauna, Turkish bath, Japanese pool and ice fountain, and it is open to non-residents. For the Tramuntana roads, the hotel lends bikes and arranges hikes to Deià, Valldemossa and Sóller.
